A Twist on a Classic!
Did you know you can turn the classic game charades, into an interactive maths activity? It's the perfect task for students to practise reasoning, vocabulary, and problem-solving while having fun. It is great for warm-ups, fast-finishers, or brain breaks!
How to Play
Two students sit at the front, backs to the whiteboard or IWB, while a number, shape, or maths term is shown behind them. They ask yes/no questions to the class until they figure it out.
Handy Tip: Give each student a mini whiteboard to write their questions and answers. It keeps them organised, adds strategy, and makes the game more fun!
For example:
Number: 48
Sample questions: Is it odd? Is it a multiple of 6? Is it greater than 50?
Shape: Pentagon
Sample questions: Does it have equal sides? Does it have right angles? Does it have more than four sides?
Maths Term: Numerator
Sample questions: Is it part of a fraction? Does it show how many parts are shaded? Is it the number on the top?
-
Gets the whole class actively involved from start to finish
-
Encourages students to use precise mathematical language when asking and answering questions
-
Helps build critical thinking and deductive reasoning skills
-
The game-show style keeps students highly motivated and excited to participate
-
Easy to adapt for any maths topic, whether you’re working with numbers, shapes, data, or terminology
This fun twist on the game charades is a quick, playful maths game that builds confidence, teamwork, and numeracy skills. Give it a go this week as a warm-up or a quick maths challenge!
