Would You Rather?
I love starting my maths lessons with Would You Rather? It’s a simple warm-up that sparks discussion, encourages reasoning, and always brings a few laughs in the classroom.
How It Works
Start by giving students a choice between two math-related options and ask them to pick one. Then, have them explain their reasoning to the class. For example, you might ask, “Would you rather have 5 groups of 4 oranges or 4 groups of 5 oranges?” Students decide which option they prefer and justify their answer.
More Examples:
Why It's So Good
-
Engages students with fun, decision-making maths challenges
-
Sparks critical thinking as they explain and justify their choices
-
Builds collaboration through class discussions and idea-sharing
-
Connects maths to real-life situations students can relate to
- Can be used in any maths lesson or concept
If you need a quick, engaging warm-up, try Would You Rather? Give students two math choices, have them pick and explain, and watch the discussion and reasoning take off!
