NUMBERS ROUND
How this works
Getting a round ready
- Click "Customise round" to set the rules and, if you'd like one, a timer.
- Every round draws 6 numbers the same way the real numbers-round game does: a mix of "big" numbers (25, 50, 75, 100) and "small" numbers (1–10, two of each), plus a 3-digit target between 101 and 999.
- Use the "Big numbers" stepper to choose how many big numbers are drawn each round (0 to 4) — the rest are drawn small. Fewer big numbers (or none at all) makes for an easier round.
- Tick "Use a timer" to add a countdown, then use the +/− buttons to set how many seconds students get (from 10 up to 120). Leave it unticked to play with no time limit. The timer sits up next to the title once it's turned on.
To play
- Click "New round" to draw a fresh set of numbers and a target — each number spins before landing, and the target lands last, once all 6 numbers are down.
- Students use any of +, −, ×, ÷ to combine some or all of the numbers (using each number at most once) to reach the target exactly, or as close as they can.
- Use the "Working out" space to type up a solution on screen as a class, or leave it for students to work out in their books instead. Click "Clear" to wipe it without starting a new round.
- If the timer is turned on, click "Start" when you want the countdown to begin, and "Reset" to put it back to the full time.
- Click "Reveal solution" to show one way of reaching the target (or the closest possible number, if an exact match isn't possible — this happens occasionally, just like on the real show).
- Click "New round" again whenever you're ready for the next set of numbers.
The solution shown is just one valid path to the answer — there's often more than one way to get there, so a student's different working can still be completely correct. It's worth checking their steps rather than only comparing to what's revealed here.
Saving your settings
There's nothing to save in this tool — every round is generated fresh, and the working-out space clears with each new round. Your big-number count and timer settings are remembered automatically in this browser on this device, so they'll still be set the way you left them next time.
Out of 6 numbers total — the rest are drawn small (1–10).
