Sort
Each student works through their flashcards for their current times table, saying the answer out loud before flipping to check. Every fact gets sorted into one of two piles: "Nailed It" or "Not Yet."
Retrieval practice — actively recalling answers rather than passively reviewing them — builds significantly better retention than chanting or restudy (Ophuis-Cox et al., 2023), and sorting into mastered/unmastered piles directs practice precisely at each student's gaps (Leitner, 1972; Karpicke & Blunt, 2011).
Practise
Each student looks at their "Not Yet" fact, covers the answer, writes it from memory, then checks what they wrote. Three correct in a row and it moves to "Nailed It."
Covering the answer and writing it from memory strengthens recall through retrieval practice and motor encoding (Paivio, 1971; Becker et al., 2009), and requiring three correct responses in a row builds genuine automaticity and intrinsic motivation (Haring & Eaton, 1978).
Sprint
A 60-second timed drill. Students race through as many facts from their times table as they can, and their score gets recorded.
Explicit timing procedures are a key component of many evidence-based fluency programs (Miller et al., 2011; Poncy et al., 2013; Schutte et al., 2015), and correct answers per minute is a reliable, sensitive form of progress monitoring (Musti-Rao & Plati, 2015).
Track
Students plot their score on their own bar graph, working toward the target: 40 correct answers per minute.
Self-graphing is an important step in fluency programs (Bryant et al., 2015) — it creates a chance for self-monitoring and reflection, and leads to enhanced basic facts performance (Figarola et al., 2008; Gross et al., 2014). The 40 CAPM target reflects the threshold for true automaticity (Sleeman et al., 2021).
The entire routine is done, and it's straight on to the rest of the maths lesson.
The Full Fluency Pathway
Students begin at ×1 and work through the times tables one at a time, using this same 4-step routine every day. A student moves on when they reach 40 correct answers per minute, or when their score has plateaued for 3 days in a row, whichever comes first.
Once multiplication facts are automatic, students move straight into the same routine for division facts — building recall the same way, table by table.
From there, students progress to multi-digit multiplication and division, where automatic fact recall means they can focus on the strategy instead of getting stuck on the basics.

Yes! The included how-to video walks you through the entire routine step by step, so it's just as easy to run at home as it is in the classroom.
All of my students are at different ability levels, how will this routine work?
Every student follows the exact same routine, just with their own flashcards for whichever times table they're up to. That means your whole class can Sort, Practise, Sprint and Track together in the same 10 minutes, regardless of who's working on what. And if a student powers through all 12 times tables, there are games and mixed fact sheets ready to keep them challenged.
What year levels is this suited for?
This bundle spans Years 3 to 6. The single-digit fact fluency packs are technically aligned to Years 3 and 4, and the multi-digit multiplication and division pack is aligned to Years 5 and 6. But so many students in the upper grades are still relying on inefficient strategies to work out their facts, so this bundle caters to all abilities no matter which year level you teach.
Is there a lot to set up and print?
Less than you'd think. You don't need to print every times table's flashcards for every student upfront — because students move through the tables at their own pace, you only need a few tables printed and ready to go at a time, and flashcards can be shared between two students. The tracking sheets can go straight into write-and-wipe sleeves, so you only need to print those once.
