Equation Detectives
Students become “detectives,” working through equations to spot mistakes, justify their thinking, and fix the errors. It’s a fun, problem-solving maths game that builds critical thinking and keeps students engaged as they work things out together.
How It Works
Give your students an equation with a mistake and have them work out what’s wrong. They identify the error, explain their thinking, and then correct the equation to make it true. Add a time limit to keep the pace up and make it more exciting. You can run it individually, in pairs, or in small groups for a bit of friendly competition.
For Example:
Equation: 12 ÷ (3 + 1) × 2 = 10
Student notices the error:
Step 1: Solve inside the parentheses → 3 + 1 = 4
Step 2: Divide → 12 ÷ 4 = 3
Step 3: Multiply → 3 × 2 = 6, not 10
Corrected equation: 12 ÷ (3 + 1) × 2 = 6
Why It's So Good
• Encourages critical thinking and attention to detail
• Builds mental maths, problem-solving, and reasoning skills
• Quick and flexible as it can use addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, or combined operations
• Perfect as a warm-up, bell-ringer, or short group challenge
