Tug of War
Maths Tug of War is another free, low-prep maths warm-up I like to use from Transum.org. It challenges students to calculate quickly, work together as a team, and race to pull the rope in their favour - boosting mental maths, speed, and teamwork all at once!
How It Works

Assign one player or team as Red and the other as Blue. If using a keyboard, Red uses the number keys 1–5 and Blue uses 6–0, with the Enter key used to submit answers. Each correct answer pulls the tug-of-war marker towards that team, while incorrect answers push it towards the opposition. The aim is to move the marker past your team’s yellow post to win the game.
Why It's So Good
• Quick, engaging, and competitive and perfect for energising the class
• Reinforces maths skills while encouraging speed and accuracy
• Can be played by individuals or small teams
• Instant feedback keeps students motivated
• Works well in-class or online, and is easy to set up
Try this with your students and see how quickly they get hooked on it!
