Maths O'clock
If your students enjoy sharing different ways to solve a problem, they'll love this activity. This low-prep maths warm-up turns a simple clock face into a creative challenge that gets everyone thinking.
How It Works
Each student draws a blank clock face and writes the numbers 1–12 around the outside. For each number, they write a number sentence on the inside of the clock that equals that digit. The aim is to be as creative as possible with their equations. Once finished, students share and compare answers with a partner.
- 90 ÷ 10 = 9
- 3² = 9, or
- 4.5 × 2 = 9
Why It's So Good
• Encourages creative and flexible thinking about numbers.
• Reinforces a variety of mathematical operations in one activity.
• Easy to differentiate for different ability levels.
• Perfect as a 5–10 minute maths warm-up or lesson starter.
Maths O'Clock is one of those activities that's simple to set up but gets students thinking in lots of different ways. Give it a go and see what creative equations your class comes up with!
