Who knew a blank clock face could create so much mathematical thinking?

This week's Monday Morning Maths Club activity is Maths O'Clock, a quick, no-prep warm-up that transforms a familiar classroom object into a creative maths game that students will love!

Maths O'clock

If your students enjoy sharing different ways to solve a problem, they'll love this activity. This low-prep maths warm-up turns a simple clock face into a creative challenge that gets everyone thinking.

How It Works

Each student draws a blank clock face and writes the numbers 1–12 around the outside. For each number, they write a number sentence on the inside of the clock that equals that digit. The aim is to be as creative as possible with their equations. Once finished, students share and compare answers with a partner.

For example, for the number 9, students might write…

90 ÷ 10 = 9
3² = 9, or
4.5 × 2 = 9

Need something easier? Limit students to one operation (e.g. addition only) or fill in a few examples around the clock to get them started.

Need something harder? Challenge students to use all four operations across their clock, or include multi-step equations, e.g. 2 × 2 + 2 = 6
