This week's Monday Morning Maths Club activity is Mystery Digits, a low-floor, high ceiling challenge that encourages students to think, test ideas, and explain their reasoning.

Mystery Digits

Some of the best maths conversations happen when there's more than one correct answer. That's exactly why this is one of my favourite maths warm-ups. It's a low floor, high ceiling activity that gets every student thinking, no matter where they're at.

How It Works

Students find values for ★, ♥ and ▲ that make the equation true. They must also ensure that one number is even and the other two are odd.

For Example:

★ = 7, ♥ = 5, ▲ = 2
→ 7 + 5 − 2 = 10

★ = 9, ♥ = 3, ▲ = 2
→ 9 + 3 − 2 = 10

Need something easier?
Remove the condition that numbers must be specifically odd or even, e.g. If ★ + ♥︎ - ▲ = 10, what might be the value of ★, ♥︎ and ▲?

Need something harder?
Change the question to: If ★ + ♥︎ - ▲ = 10, what might be the value of ★, ♥︎ and ▲ if one of the integers is negative?
