Mystery Digits
Some of the best maths conversations happen when there's more than one correct answer. That's exactly why this is one of my favourite maths warm-ups. It's a low floor, high ceiling activity that gets every student thinking, no matter where they're at.
How It Works
→ 7 + 5 − 2 = 10
→ 9 + 3 − 2 = 10
Remove the condition that numbers must be specifically odd or even, e.g. If ★ + ♥︎ - ▲ = 10, what might be the value of ★, ♥︎ and ▲?
Change the question to: If ★ + ♥︎ - ▲ = 10, what might be the value of ★, ♥︎ and ▲ if one of the integers is negative?
• Encourages creative thinking with multiple correct answers.
• Gets every student involved, regardless of ability level.
• Builds number sense and confidence with integers and operations.
• Sparks rich mathematical discussions as students compare their solutions.
• Perfect as a 5–10 minute maths warm-up with almost no preparation.
Mystery Digits is one of those low-prep maths activities you'll probably come back to again and again. It's quick, engaging, and every class approaches it a little differently.
