Shape Hunt
Shape Hunt is a quick, hands-on maths activity that gets students moving, observing, and thinking mathematically while having fun.
How It Works
Give each student a sheet with a list or pictures of shapes and have them tally how many of each shape they can find around the classroom. Once they’ve finished, students can use their tallies to create graphs or charts, turning their observations into a hands-on data activity.
For Example:
Students are given a sheet with circles, squares, and triangles.
While moving around the classroom, Student A spots 4 circles, 3 squares, and 2 triangles and marks them on their tally sheet.
Student B finds 5 circles, 2 squares, and 3 triangles.
After everyone finishes, students use their tallies to create a bar graph showing how many of each shape were found.
Why It's So Good
• Students move, observe, and interact with their environment while learning
• Reinforces counting, shape recognition, and basic data handling
• Only needs a simple sheet and pencil, making it quick to set up
• Can be adapted for different year levels, abilities, or classroom spaces
