Stand Up, Sit Down
It is one of those quick, no-prep maths games I always come back to in my classroom. It gets students out of their seats, thinking fast, and making decisions. It is simple, energetic, and a great way to build critical thinking.
How It Works
Call out a maths statement, question, or problem. If it’s true, students stand up; if it’s false, they sit down. Keep the questions coming so students have to think and respond quickly. You can have students who get it wrong sit out for a round, and adjust the difficulty to suit your class.
For Example:
Level 1:
Teacher: “5 × 4 = 20” → students stand up
Teacher: “12 ÷ 3 = 2” → students sit down
Teacher: “7 + 6 = 13” → students stand up
Level 2:
Teacher: “5 × 50 = 250 → students stand up
Teacher: “46 ÷ 2 = 21” → students sit down
Teacher: “7 + 7 -1 = 13” → students stand up
Why It's So Good
• Quick, active, and energising, perfect for a 5–10 minute warm-up
• Builds speed, accuracy, and mental maths skills
• Works with any topic: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, or even word problems
• Encourages focus, listening, and classroom participation
• Fun, competitive, and keeps students engaged
Get your students on their feet and thinking fast with Stand Up Sit Down. I’d love to hear how it went!
