Maths In a Line
Maths In a Line is one of those activities that instantly lifts the energy in my classroom. It’s fast, fun, and a great way to build mental maths skills without them even realising it.
How It Works
Ask your students to line up in a row. The student at the front starts by saying a number. The next student applies the operation you give (for example, ×2) and says the answer. If they are correct, they move to the back of the line. If they are wrong, they step out. Keep the game going as the line cycles, and add a time limit if you want to make it more challenging and exciting.
For Example:
Student 1: 5
Student 2: 5 × 2 → 10 (goes to the back of the line)
Student 3: 10 × 2 → 20 (goes to the back of the line)
Student 4: 20 × 2 → 50 (steps out)
The line keeps cycling, testing speed, accuracy, and focus.
