Pico, Fermi, Bagel
Pico, Fermi, Bagel is a simple yet powerful maths game. Similar to games like Mastermind and Wordle, students try to guess a secret number using clues, making it a fun, low-stakes way to build problem-solving skills and number sense.
How It Works
In this game, the teacher thinks of a secret number and the students guess it. After each guess, the teacher says ‘Fermi’ for a correct digit in the right place, ‘Pico’ for a correct digit in the wrong place, and ‘Bagel’ if the digit isn’t in the number. Students keep guessing using the clues until they get it.
For Example:
Say the secret number is 427. A student guesses 274. The code maker would say ‘Pico, Fermi, Pico’ – the 2 and 7 are correct digits in the wrong place (Pico) and the 4 is correct and in the right place (Fermi). Students use these clues to make their next guess until they crack the number.
Why It's So Good
• Engaging as students will love guessing and working out the code
• Builds logical reasoning, problem-solving, and critical thinking
• Can be adapted for all abilities with easier or harder numbers
• Works as a quick warm-up, small group activity, or whole-class game
• Feels like a game rather than a lesson but sneaks in maths thinking
Quick games like Pico, Fermi, Bagel get students engaged and thinking logically. They’re easy to run, boost confidence, and make maths a warm-up students enjoy.
