What if a quick trip to the shops became your next maths warm-up?

This week's Monday Morning Maths Club activity is This Is My Change, a simple, open-ended warm-up that gets students thinking about money, problem-solving, and making sensible choices.

This Is My Change

Ever noticed how excited students get when maths feels like real life? This free maths activity challenges students to think like real shoppers as they calculate totals and work out the correct change!

How It Works

Challenge students to choose a reasonable price for each of the two items shown. They then calculate the total cost and work out how much money they would need to pay so they receive 75 cents change.

Students should clearly show their working to prove that:

Amount paid − Total cost = 75c

Possible Answer:

You bought a bottle of milk for $3.00 and a loaf of bread for $5.25, totaling $8.25. You gave the cashier $9, so you got 75c change.

Need something easier?

Make the change a round number, i.e. $1 change

Need something harder?

Students must think of 4 of their own items, rather than the 2 predetermined items.
