Two Truths and a Lie
If your students enjoy a challenge, they'll love this one. This free and no-prep maths warm-up is a simple way to get students talking, reasoning, and sharing what they already know.
How It Works
Choose a maths topic and ask students to write two true statements and one false statement about it.
Once they've finished, students can swap with a partner or work as a class to figure out which statement is the lie. Encourage them to explain their thinking and justify their answers.
- Shape: write 2 truths and a lie about a rectangle
- Measurement: write 2 truths and a lie about converting between units of length
- Probability: write 2 truths and a lie about conducting chance experiments
• Activates prior knowledge before a new unit.
• Quickly uncovers misconceptions.
• Encourages mathematical reasoning and discussion.
• Works with almost any maths topic.
• Easy to adapt for different year levels and ability levels.
This is one of those warm-ups that's just as much fun for the teacher as it is for the students. Sit back, listen to the discussions, and see what your class already knows!
